Few things are as unbearably asinine as the sound of a “Liberal” uttering the name of Hamilton in a conversation about Democracy thinking the Federalist and lover of Kings would EVER support any government in which the average person had a direct say in its formation. While some (and perhaps much) of the blame lies with our primary schools and their presentation of “American History” as if it was some form of holy scripture they do not bear sole responsibility. Since 1980 I’ve noticed a downward trend in critical thinking among the average member of the populace. No doubt some of that is the result of an ever increasing belief that one need merely “have” an opinion rather than “form” an opinion. Indeed, not so long ago an unnamed family member tried to end a discussion by invoking personal “feelings” as a legitimate basis for a decision that demands serious thought.
I suppose I should have been far more alarmed when one of my daughter’s high school teachers called me to complain that my daughter was asking “too many questions.” I was deeply concerned upon hearing this so, of course, I spoke with the teacher about it. My first question to her was whether my daughter’s questions were relevant to the materials being presented. I was beyond surprised when she said “yes.” I won’t belabor this but let me just say the conversation ended with my clear threat to seek the teacher’s termination if she ever tried to preclude my daughter from engaging in the very sort of questioning and fact-finding I consider the only acceptable foundation for one’s “opinion.” While I’ve told this story a number of times only recently have I learned that the views and approach of my daughter’s aforementioned teacher were far more the norm than the exception. There should be little surprise that our beloved “one nation under God” has steadily descended into the bowels of human history where I fear it will wallow until a final, bloody demise.
I suppose I should be thankful that I’m on the back end of my time here on Earth but what I actually am is terrified. I’m not worried about myself. Despite (though also because of) my far left leanings I am a marksman and own a few well oiled firearms. I’ve also used them with great success when intruders attempted to break into my home. My concerns, instead, revolve around my children and, most of all, grandchildren. Certainly I hope (and expect) to be around long enough to help my grandchildren become excellent critical thinkers however the problem they will face in this regard is being in an ever shrinking minority. What they won’t become (and herein lies my fear) is self-absorbed, money grubbing capitalist sycophants. In the year 2020 it is the grifters who have ascended to high office and serve at the whim of their billionaire overlords. They are beyond unscrupulous as they often adopt positions that are the very antithesis of what they actually believe even if it means people they claim to love and care about will suffer. In the early 80s there was much talk of the “Me” generation. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was being hailed by intellectuals (and politicians) of the time as the de facto conscience of the species (despite his views of the West set forth in a June 1978 commencement address). Right as the Soviet critic was about the West had I seen into the future and had the chance to meet him in person I would have told him - “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!”
The average “Liberal” of the early 21st Century is a living, breathing oxymoron. They deem themselves liberals believing that their own ultraconservative views are anything but conservative. I’d point out to them that Webster’s defines “conservative” (at least as used here) as “tending or disposed to maintain existing views, conditions, or institutions” but it would be a complete waste of my time and energy. It would be even greater folly to note that “liberal” is defined as “one who is open-minded or not strict in the observance of orthodox, traditional, or established forms or ways.” The abuse of these terms has gotten so bad that the average leftist on Twitter has abandoned the term “liberal” opting instead for “leftist,” “comrade” or my denomination of choice - tovarisch. While I don’t believe that Western Society is quite ready to acknowledge the failings of capitalism and fully move towards a more socialistic economy it is at least a worthwhile goal. It is not, however, a goal held by “liberals” in the year 2020.
It is the dark future of the country and the planet that frightens me most and causes me deep concern about my descendants. It is “liberals” most of all who make me wish I could live longer and, hopefully, outlive most of them. I have no delusions about being able to persuade them. Their minds are closed to even the possibility they are wrong in their “opinions.” The fact they have flocked to a racist, senile, unabashed grifter who is nearly 80 at this point in time as their savior, whether he wins the election ostensibly being held on November 3 or not, is proof enough of their volitional ignorance. Few things underscore this conclusion more than their love of the most undemocratic of the Founding Fathers - the Federalists. It was this group, and their best known member - Hamilton, that most strongly advocated for the Constitution that exists to this day. They were also the greatest supporters of that most undemocratic of institutions - the Electoral College. Indeed, the very notion of the great unwashed masses directly selecting the President of the United States would have given Hamilton and his ilk the vapors. Add to this the “liberal” refusal to understand the “dual sovereignty” that is one of the hallmarks of our nation and the problems only multiply.
While I am in no way sure that I really want to live beyond 100 the “liberal threat” facing the species and planet causes me not only to be concerned about my future dotage but even more so about what my grandchildren will face in a not too distant future. The “America” I learned about in elementary and high school never existed but it was not irrational to believe it was, in fact, possible. So it is I now pray!
